February 20. Waxing gibbous.
Crystal-clear formations appear in the lake's melting ice shards.
Unseasonably warm weather is melting the ice at the lake. Four inch thick chunks are piled by the wind at the shore. Eerie sounds of breaking glass squeal as the ice mounds collapse into the lake.
Red-tailed hawk takes off after unsuccessfully digging in the snow for an escaping vole. Note the snow on his talons and his dejected expression.
On to his next target.

Target: small melt pond on the frozen lake. Flaps extended, ailerons down, ok, hit the deck!

Tracking this Red-tailed Hawk with my friends Kiyo, Chisato, and George. Possibly the most photographed hawk in the park this winter.
Very active hawk foraging by the lake.
Surprised by a red-tailed hawk coming at us from behind a nearby hill - barely a few seconds to get a shot.
We saw no bald eagles for nearly two hours. Finally, as the light was fading, this red-tailed hawk appeared.
